dokumenta50 - mobile interactive installation, 2005

in 2005 kassels "documenta" celebrated its 50th anniversary. 11 exhibitions were organized since the "documenta" had been founded in 1955. to give an overview about these last 50 years to a wider audience a mobile installation explaining the 11 former exhibitions had been designed.
for this purpose a truck was converted into an exhibition space. alongside the inner wall the 11 exhibitions were represented by their original posters. out of these posters the information of every exhibition flows onto an interactive table. via a touch-sensitive surface the visitors were able to access information about the curatorial concept, artistic positions, reactions, the zeitgeist and statistics.
to show the correlation and flow between the posters and the appendant segment of the table a virtual scan-line traveled over these posters and generated a correlating dynamic background.
the installation altered between two modes. on one hand the visitors were able to interactively inform themselves about every "documenta". from time to time the whole table surface toke over and changes from an interactive to a video-mode and showed a movie about kassel the host city of "documenta".
in 2005 the documenta truck toured around 11 german cities. since september 2006, the installation has found a permanent home in the documenta archive in kassel.
